At least one top five US department has notified its first round candidates.

There are interviews for postdocs now? In the good old days, you just got the offer out of the blue..

Apparently I misused this terminology...what I meant is they were notified that an offer will come.

Sure that is reasonable

I had one in the US for a non-stop postdoc. I took a better one than the one I had to do an interview for. Baffling I was asked to do it.

I had a postdoc interview in the US, to assess teaching. (Wasn't a very prestigious school)

Evidently I am not in the first round (no surprises here). Thanks for letting us know!

Complete and utter BS. Why would any place notify anybody so much ahead of the NSF deadline?

I am aware of 4 separate offers from top schools. Maybe the departments just wanted to show how ignorant cvya is.

If you are so informed why won’t you be more specific

In part out of curiousity (and in part for my sanity), what would it take to get an offer at this stage? (Does anyone know) Are there typically spots left after this round?

Of course. Usually only the first choices (in an area) get an offer at this point, and the offers overlap within departments and NSF. For most people the "real round" starts after NSF announcement which is mid-January.
